In her own words…

In 2018, she was appointed to preside as Court Attorney Referee over the first exclusively civil domestic violence court in the Fifth Judicial District. She believes that in this sensitive, highly emotional, and sometimes volatile area of the law, it is essential that judges and jurists always monitor the temperature in the courtroom and employ proper judicial temperament to these stressful cases.

Prior to her appointment as Court Attorney Referee, Karen served as Principal Court Attorney to the Hon. James R. Griffith, in Oneida County Family Court, located in Rome and Utica, New York. It is Judge Griffith’s retirement that led to the vacancy for a Family Court judge, which Karen hopes to fill on November 2, 2021. She says “Judge Griffith has been a mentor and taught me so much about Family Court and the first Civil Family Treatment Court in Utica/Rome, which Judge Griffith established and presided over from 2006 until 2019.” Prior to working with Judge Griffith, Karen was an associate attorney at Felt Evans, LLP, in Clinton, New York, where she specialized in family and matrimonial law. At Felt Evans, LLP, she perfected her love for this area of the law and expanded her view of what a “family” really is: “they are the people who truly love you.”
